HELP ? 1988 GTA shifting problem between 1st and 2nd ?

My car has been having a shifting problem. It seems like first gear is winding out way to long. ( takes too long to shift out of first into second ) If I play with the gas pedal a bit ( let off the throttle just a bit when the rpm's rise and it seems like the point that it SHOULD be shifting) it will make it go ahead and shift out of first into second. ... If I do not do this then it will go really high on the rpm. It WILL shift easily from 1st to 2nd when I let off the throttle just a hair though.... and only does this between 1st and 2nd...

can ANYONE please help ? has anyone experienced this same problem ?

the car is a 1988 GTA 5.7 TPI

It sounds like your 1-2 clutch pack is going out. Is it only the 1-2 shift?

i have the same issue at 2-3.
i have to completely let off the throttle to engage into 3rd gear.

you will more than likely need a rebuild..

if its not the kickdown/T.V cable.

Re: HELP ? 1988 GTA shifting problem between 1st and 2nd ?

thanks for the responses.

this in only happening from 1st to 2nd. let off the throttle and it shifts

so the only thing that could cause this could be would be the cable adjustment or the trans is going aout and I need a complete rebuild ?

Not sure if THIS has anything to do with it, but the car has a digital dash with a SHIFT LIGHT . Before this problem started, the shift light would come on every now and then...I never noticed a problem with the trans, just this light sometimes... no idea why this light would come on with an automatic trans ? I had some faulty wiring repaired and it never happened since.

I will do the TV adjustmnet and see if that helps. thanks

Re: HELP ? 1988 GTA shifting problem between 1st and 2nd ?

i tried toe cv adjustment on mine as well. it didnt help on mine.
you might get lucky but

you dont HAVE to perform a complete overhaul on the trans.
if you are on an extreme budget and are doing it yourself you can change the part at fault only.
but you have to take apart 40% of the trans. so why not change everything while you are in there
