Noise in higher gears, only when on throttle

So, it sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car (hoping its the rear and not the transmission).

The noise doesn't happen in 1st-3rd (well, sometimes you can hear it slightly in 3rd), but its quite prevalent in 4th-6th. You will only hear the noise when on the throttle/maintaining speed. When you let off the throttle, there is no noise while decelerating.

The noise is a "wharbling" (best way I can describe it). Its a whining noise with a slight oscillation that gets somewhat louder the faster you go. However, the noise does not vary with gear speed, but rather road speed (no real change in pitch after changing gears, only when you speed up/slow down).

Any ideas? I can get audio or even video if need be.

Added Details: The noise is coming from the rear, no difference in noise between different gears. Noise starts around 35-40 mph. Pitch increases with speed.

mine does that also. I've been told its a worn bearing in the rear end. But Its done it as long as Ive owned the car. but mine gets louder when you come off the gas

All signs so far point to pinion bearing... how hard are these to change?

if it was a bearing noise you would hear the noise constantly.

if it only happens when you either increase throttle or maintain it and it goes away as soon as you let go of the throttle , its more likely to be the ring gear and pinion itself thats at fault.

jeepboy's rear is more likely to be a bearing because his happens when hes decelerating.

one way to check if its the bearings is..

and please take all necessary precautions. i dont want to be blamed for errors made.

have the rear of the veh up in the air , have the rear wheels at LEAST a half a foot if not a full foot off the ground. the reason for this is to make sure the wheels are off the ground.
get a stethescope or a phillips screw driver.
have an extra person get in the car and take it up to the speed at which you heare the noise at. in your case its 35-40.
have them maintain that speed. get underneath and be EXTREMELY CAREFUL
because the driveshaft is spinning as well as the tires.

put the tip of the screw driver on both sides of the pumpkin and put your ear on the butt end of the screw driver and listen, if you hear a loud whinning noise then its your carrier bearings.
same for the pinion bearing.

put the tip of the screw driver on the case right underneath the pinion and your ear to the butt end and listen for the noise...

if you dont hear it from either bearings as your partner maintains the speed. have him/her take their foot off the gas pedal and let the car decelerate. and check again..
if you hear nothing as the car decels. then its deffinately your ring gear and pinion.

but if you are overhauling the rear your obviously going to replace the bearings as well..
