installing a T56

Okay I have a 1988 coupe that has a built 400 motor with a TH400 . I want to swap out the Th400 to a T56 6 speed. I am confused as I am told buy a early T56 not a late one as the servo is different. Whats up ?? Which one do I buy. This is a Automatic car and always has been. I want to convert it to a manual. pedals and torque arms are not the issue. Which T56 is the right one for a 1988 with a 400 CI engine. I can cut holes. This is not a street car!

Re: installing a T56

You can buy either one from an LT1 engine (93-97 4th gen Fbody) or the aftermarket T56 from several companies online. Check out the two T56 tech articles linked from the main page of this website for some more info.

The LS1 T56 is different in the clutch setup, which is what you were being told.

Thanks kevin . That clears it up. I did not want to get my new toy home only to discover it would not work

I'm not positive on this but I believe the 400 blocks are 2 peice rear main seals. If that is the case you'll need more than the usual swap parts as the LT1 flywheel wont bolt up.
