adaptor for use of T56 on T5 bell housing

GM sells a T56 trans kit that comes with a drilled plate that allows a T56 to mount to a T5 bell housing, so the bell housing, clutch, etc doesn't have to be changed. Does anyone know if they sell the adaptor plate seperate or can I only get it in the kit? My friend sells T56's for $1500 with viper internals.

I'd ask the guys over at http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com

They're probably the largest dealer of the Borg-Warner aftermarket T-56 transmissions.

Just so you know, this does require a different transmission crossmmeber then if you are swapping in a 4Gen T-56/Bellhousing. Using the adapter plate and the T-5 bellhousing puts the transmission mount 1.9" further to the rear of the car.

We now have a kit for this T-56 swap as well. Good luck.

Steve

Wouldn't it require the d-shaft to be shortened too? BTW are they the same spline?

Yes, they say in the write-up for the kit that driveshaft has to be shorted 2", which is one of the biggest things keeping me from getting one. I dont want to cut up my aluminum driveshaft.

The two choices we have when swapping to the T56 is either the aftermarket version or the OEM 4th gen version, generally.

Aftermarket has a mechanical speedo drive, and steeper gears (so you 3.73's or 4.11's aren't an absolute necessity). The torque capacity is slightly lower due to the steeper first gear. Since the aftermarket T56 bolts to an adapter (that bolts to your T5 bellhousing) you can use the T5 push style clutch, but you do need to shorten both your driveshaft and torque arm. A new crossmember is required, which is different from the OEM T56 crossmember by being two inches longer.

OEM (4th gen) T56 has an electric speedo sender, and you are required to run the 4th gen pull style clutch. The driveshaft and torque arm do not need to be modified. Gear ratios are pretty tall if you are running 3.08's or 2.73's, but that 0.5 6th gear double overdrive is nice (24 mpg with bigass injectors at 85 mph) A new crossmember is required. I hope this answers a few questions.

Andris, your link wasnt found. I think it needs a capital T in t56.
