how can i tell if i have a bad tranny

I need to now what some commen simtoms of bad clutches or the tranny. The fluid is red brown. I dont know what has been done to it because i just bought the car about two weeks ago. It is also hard to put the car into reverse and the car realy like drops the hole car into gear. One more thing the car smells the something is burning or rotten eggs.
thanks for the help

Brown fluid is a sign of the clutches burning. Noticable things will be the tranny slipping or even grinding if its gotten bad. Change the fluid/filter ASAP and hope for the best. Ive never smelled it but Ive heard the rotten egg smell is a sign of a clogged catalytic convertor.
