T-5 speedo gear
T-5 speedo gear
I am going to swap the speedo gear in my t-5 the one in there is the purple 7 tooth one for the 3.08 rear. I have 2.77 so since there is only one other gear I could find, a red 9 tooth one, I figure that is as close as I am going to get. Anyway, all I have to do is replace the one gear on the shaft in the tailhousing right? My tranny leaks so I have to take it apart anyway so I figure now is a good time. Anyone who has swapped these two gears and has some pointers, I could use your help. Thank a lot.
Its easy to swap. you can do it in the car; its easiest if you remove the cross member. You can get different gears from GM and some parts stores. Also if your T-5 is leaking out the front (around the input shaft bearing or caounter shaft bearing)find another case. The cases stretch in the front causing the gears to mesh inadequately and eventual failure. Ive been told that the 6 cyl T-5 cases are the same, that would be the way to go.
It is leaking a lot out the front. In fact it got fluid all over my clutch. The bearing retainer sleeve is chipped but I have another one of those. This tranny is only going to be in there until I can afford a t-56 so I plan on resealing all the mating surfaces and just sealing what I can. The internals look fine and it drives and shifts smoothly and quietly. I am hoping this will cure my problems for the short term.
Youll probably be OK for a while. While you have the retainer apart, you should re-shim the mainshaft...i shimmed mine to .012 (recommended .008-.012. I think they are standard shims that are used in many trannys...you can probably get them at NAPA or other parts stores. It will make the tranny shift better and increase durability
