I need clutch info!
My car is an 89 305 tpi with the t-5. I am swapping in a monster 383( 480ft/lbs and 420 hp) and I need to find out what clutch I need to get. I was looking at the center force dual friction clutches from JEGS. They however are asking what flexplate diameter and and clutch spline numbers I need. I need to know this can anyone help me out? Will this help to keep my engine from ripping the **** out of my t-5 until I can get it rebuilt?
Thanks
Robert

I have had the CF DF clutch behind the 400 in my 83 for some years now; this is the 2nd one, and I'm quite happy with them. It's a good choice IMHO.
You need the stock replacement configuration for your car, which is 10.4" and 26 splines. That's the only size that will fit inside the 3rd gen bell housing.
In fact, having a clutch that hooks up hard will enable you to destroy your trans faster, not the reverse. A T-5 will be a maintenance item behind such a motor (speaking strictly from experience). Rebuilding it doesn't help, the fundamental problem is that the parts are too small, particularly the case is too weak. It stretches under large loads enough to allow the gears to misalign, which of course causes rapid wear. Shock loading (produced by dumping the clutch at a stop, and speed shifting) is the worst possible stress on it.

Thanks for the information. I am on a tight budget putting in this motor. What can I do to try and beef up the tranny to last a little longer behind this engine? I want to switch to a T56 tranny but I don't have the funds to do this right now. I dont plan on taking the motor above 3,000rpm's while I am breaking it in. After that I will take it easy on the trans until I can get the T56. The trans has 160,000 miles on it.

Are you gonna go to the F-body vs Mustang Shootout at Carlsbad Raceway on Oct 8th? If so I'll see you there! I didnt know you were local to me.

If you're planning to change over to a T-56 get a cheap remaned clutch, it'll suck, but that's half the point. Unless you plan to get a re-drilled T-56 you'll probably end up switching the flywheel and clutch to an LT1 set-up. Those kind of numbers are really really pushing a T-5 and you won't be able to do a complete break-in on the motor as suggested by most automotive engine producers. The hard accelerations will murder it. Perhaps you should delay engine installation until you can afford a tranny that can hold up?
