Help! how to I get to the top of the tranny crossmember bolts?

There doesn't seem to be any access hole so I can get a wrench on the top of these bolts so when I try to loosen the nut, the bolt will just spin freely

There is no nut, just a plate that is wedged and tack welded into the uni-body. If it spins then something is damaged. You will have to drill or grind off the bolt head and push the plate forward to the access hole about 1 foot in front of the tranny bolts. Here's the bullsh!t part. A hole will have to be drilled (where the old bolt was) and a nut with the shoulders rounded off can be held in the hole with a long bolt while someone MIG welds the bolt flush to the uni-body. Sorry man but **** just hit the fan.

Well, it's not exactly a plate, more of a soft, square nut tack welded in. My '82 didn't have holes for the longer '86 TH700, so I had to put nuts in there somehow. I punched a hole behind it wide enough to get a wrench in there to hold the nut while I tightened the bolt. You should be able to do the same thing to hold the nut on yours, assuming the flats line up reasonably well (which shouldn't be a problem since it's already spinning). You could also punch the hole from the side, but that could be hard to do, especially on the passenger side with the exhaust right there.

You aren't going to weaken the frame by doing it. Just a matter of how much ugly you're willing to accept.
