Limited Slip Unit
I have an 84 Camaro H.O., which should have 3.73 gears.. but I checked out the differential and the code on it shows that I NOW have 2.73 posi from an 87 F-car. The guy before me must have switched it out. I am looking to change to either 3.73 or 4.10 gears.. but I NEED posi-traction. The problem is that, if I jack the car up, and I turn one of the back wheels, the other one turns in the OPPOSITE direction. With posi-traction, they should both turn in the same direction. Could something be messed up inside? Can I have this differential rebuilt or do I need something completely different to have posi? Can I rebuilt the unit in the car and switch out the gears and have my 3.73 or 4.10 gears with posi??!?!?!?
Thanks,
John
Thanks,

i hear if you spin a wheel with posi the other wheel spins the other way. it's never worked for me in cars i know are posi. i just set one up in my 85 and it wouldn't do it, but if i spin the pinion yoke both would spin in the same direction.

Both wheels will always spin the same direction if its a posi. There are 2 different carriers for the gears, one for 3.08 and numerically lower and one numerically higher than 3.08. You would need a spacer or a special ring gear set to go to 3.73's. You didnt mention if you have and/or want disc brakes. If you want to go from a 2.73 drum, nonposi to a 3.73 disc posi, i suggest getting another rear end that already has close to what you want, it will save you time and money. I believe the 91-92 cars come with the 28 spline diff, so you can use an SLP take-off on those...might be your best bet. I know a guy who is looking to get rid of a set of richmond gear 3.73 for about $200 still in the box. email me if you are interested and ill find out more.
