Speedometer Problems

Not sure if this actually belongs here, but I figured since the speedometer connects to the tranny, it's close enough.

Anyways, I had to replace my engine and tranny a while back and have been driving without a speedometer since (Haven't been pulled over for anything, by the way). I brought it up with my dad, who's a mechanic and did the swap, and he said it's cause the tranny takes a electric speedo cable and the one I have is a driven.

He said something about having to put a different tranny in to take the driven cable but I think just replacing the dash (I.E. replacing the speedo cable) would fix it and be more cost effective.

What's right/best? Thanks!

Re: Speedometer Problems

More info is always helpful--Camaro? Bird? Transmission type? Year?
Stick the proper "sleeve" and drive and/or driven gear into the tranny housing (so that the speedo will read correctly) and bolt up. Check the T5 sticky at the top of the page for more info.

Re: Speedometer Problems

Oh yeah, sorry. Kinda posted it in a hurry at the end of work.

'86 Firebird. New tranny was from another '86 Firebird. Dash I have right now only has the speedo, odometer, and gas gauge with all the check lights off to the right side. The tranny came out of an '86 Firebird with the full dash, tachometer, speedometer, battery gauge, the works.

Thanks for the info
