700r4 questions

I've been hearing that the 700r4 has a really good 1st gear launch but then just dogs 2 3 and 4. Is this true? If so will a shift kit and one of them b&m ratchet
(i think) type shifters solve this problems?
If not should i just forget about the 700r4 and get a t-5 and will a T-5 and a stock l98 pass emissions?

A shifter has nothing to do with the performance of the transmission.

You might've heard that the 700r4 "dogs" 2,3, and 4 because of the large ratio jump between 1st and 2nd. 1st gear is a low 3.06, while 2nd gear is a 1.63. 3rd is 1.0, and 4th is 0.70.

For comparision, one of the ratio sets I have listed on a Borg-Warner T56 shows the first gear ratio as 2.66, 2nd is 1.78, 3rd is 1.30, and I'll leave off the rest. The ratios are very close together, compared to the 700r4.

So imagine taking a manual tranny car, and always shifting from 1st gear to 3rd gear (skipping over 2nd). That's what the 700r4 acts like, and that hurts acceleration. The torque convertor makes up for it a bit, but it doesn't eliminate it.

On the brighter side, that 3.06 makes for one hell of a takeoff!

I didn't know emissions had anything to do with the transmission involved... anyone?
