Please Help! I'm Screwed!

Ok, 92 RS 305. I lost 4th gear/overdrive. now for the past two days, it wont shift into third until a good 30,000 rpm. At first we thought it might be a stuck valve. But now this with the third gear i'm thinking it's something else. or the whole transmission. any suggestions? i'm desperate!

jill i hope the 30,000 rpm was a typo . i don't know much about transmissions but i'd wonder about the governer. you have checked the fluid level? take it to a shop and let the check the fluid preasure and see what they tell you.

You are misreading the tach. It's times 100 not times 1000 on a two digit tach or times a 1000 not times 10000 on a single digit tach. Not even top dragstars can spin 30,000!!! You were not shifting to 3,000 which isn't to bad...if you were flooring it and it didn't shift to 6,000 that's actually desirible. If it wouldn't shift until that high under normal conditions then you have a problem. For now, attempt to adjust the throttle valve cable (Refer to haynes manual) I'll need more info about type of shifts, timing of shifts, feel of shifts, tranny fluid color, last filter change, operation temp and miles before I can even start poking at it....

ok you are right i'm sorry. but no it's still not desirable. i like the fact that my car has that high of a shift range, but not when it wont shift driving normally until 70mph. detent cable has already been checked. trans fluid and filter were changed about two months ago. i just hit 100,000 miles on the car unfortunately. temperature is normal. shifts kind of sloppy. hard to explain. It's doing it quite selectively. i thought only when it's cold but it warmed up and proved me wrong. the fact that i already lost fourth gear and then this kind of tells me it's time to say screw it, sell my body, and get a new transmission. if it keeps running like this i'm gonna end up blowing my motor.

Jill does your tranny ever slip? I have the same car and mine started slipping after I put in a new 350, the Tranny guy told me that this is the first sign before the loss of gears, my car has 120,000 miles on it. The tranny guy went on to say that it is time for a rebuild (soft parts). OUTCH!
A quick note, my tranny will be here by this friday, if this ends up to be your story, just keep one thing in mind, alot of improvements have been made to the 700r4 trans since our car was made, ie; more clutch packs, so looking outside of the rebuild may be advantageous.
