You can identify a world class T5 by looking to the lower left of the input shaft. There will be a cap there, if its smooth and has a rounded edge its a non-world class, if it has a ridge like the top of a stock piston, it is a world class....

And on that ridge, it should say TIMKIN, that will be a World Class T5.

What year did they start using the WC T5s? I'm snagging a T5 from an 87. Am I SOL on it being a WC?

Yep, 88 was the first year for World Class T5's in f-bodies. Unless an 83-87 car was changed over. They are a direct swap for each other.

Thanks. Since this apparently won't be a WC, how long should a T5 last behind a ~300-350hp motor if I don't drive it like an idiot and don't speed shift? Chuck had 400+ horsepower and never had a problem with his (wc??) because he didn't drive it like an animal.

If you don't act like an idiot and drive like a maniac, then the T5, wether it be a world-class or not will last you many miles.......

I agree. Don't be fooled into thinking that the world class is some magical trans. Apparently they're both pretty weak. If you really wanted to you could break either type. The key is to drive reasonably, most people who break trannies are doing something wrong, i dare say, they're usually doing something slow!
