Its a lockup, and if you're gonna replace it, get another lockup converter.

Well i disagree with all of you guys. I have a 1984 Z28 with a 700R4 and i converted it to a non-lockup type tranney. In 1989 my Z28 developed a rumble at hwy cruising speeds. It drove me nuts untill i went to the SEMA show in Las Vegas. I talked to a B&M rep and he told me it was the lock-up torque converter. I bought a diesal std torque conv. (1500 stall) and had my tranney overhauled and installed an Art Carr conversion kit to rid me of the lock-up torque conv. I thought i died and went to Heaven. No more lock, unlock ,lock ,unlock. This is the way GM would have designed this tranney if it wasn't for emissions. Just my .02

Auggie, mine rumbles, too, and doesn't lock. Sounds like it has the same problem yours had. But, when I replace it, it'll have a lockup type go back in. You can fix the lock/unlock "searching" with a simple valve change.

You may have a lockup converter, but if it isn't locking up, get under the car and check to see if the previous owner disconnected the TCC plug from its socket and left it hanging. The transmission will shift smoother, but the gas mileage will drop about 2 mpg!

Uhm... dont lockup converters increase gas mileage? It eliminates the slippage, which causes less friction and heat, which makes the trans more efficient.

Jrr, can you believe that when Lee Myles did my first trans, they left that unhooked on purpose?? On my first drive, I noticed the car wasn't locking up, looked under, noticed the wire was hanging. I plugged it back in. I went back a few days later so they could check the fluid level as per their warrantee required, and joked with them that "yeah, one of your men forgot to plug the TCC back in."

He told me that he unplugged it, because the car felt better without it, and why did I plug it back in?

Of course the torque convertor grenaded a few weeks after that... some hidden crack that finally burst and took out the pump's front seal...

Then 2.5 years later the $1400 trans dies.

I hate Lee Myles.
