VSS disconnect?

I have an 1987 Trans Am with a 700-R4, if i disconnect the VSS (two wire plug where the speedo cable would go) would that screw up the computer (SES light..etc...)? in PA if you drive under 5000 miles a year, you are exempt from the sniffer test.if i disconnect the speedo, i loose the gauge, but i also loose the odometer, too right?

It will stop the odometer, but you will probably have idle and stalling problems, since the ECM uses speed to adjust and reset the IAC valve. Yes, you will have an SES light (code 24).

You never stated that. You will just have a code, no speedo, no cruise, and I highly doubt any changes is fuel milage, but you won't have the stalling.

GMtech I need your help! I'm having a real problem with my speedo/vss on '87 GTA 5.7 TPI Auto. I've thrown good money after bad on this... no fix! When I start, speedo is dead, 10-15 mins later, check engine comes on, speedo comes on and starts jumping, shortly thereafter, car goes in what I beleive is called 'limp mode' in 3rd gear.. lousy driving this way!.. only accelerates if I floor it!. I can fix this be pulling out 10amp fuse under 'gauges' but then I lose entire cluster and it runs/idles rough but at least no limp mode! what a trade off!.. anyway my question is : seeing as for the first 10-15 mins I get no signal from the vss to speedo (and the cars runs perfect with dead speedo), why not just cut that wire from vss to speedo and problem solved (i can live without speedo).. your thoughts? thank you
