Need help please :(
I just called the tranny shop that rebuilt my transmission 3000 miles ago. They said the reason it doesnt shift at anything other then 5000 rpm is because the governor is stuck and "some valves" are stuck in the valve body. They wont fix it because they think I was racing. No doubt about it, I was. Every weekend. But still, it shouldnt do this after 3000 miles should it ??? Anyway it looks like I'm getting screwed again, so I need to fix it myself somehow.
Now I know how to build an engine with one hand in the dark. I know nothing about transmissions though. What would cause this other then dirt in the fluid ? Can I like take the valve body out and clean it ? Lol And maybe install a shift kit while I'm at it ? Any ideas ?
I know I'll probably need to get a book.

Thats the biggest, and sorriest cop out I have ever heard, and I get sick of hearing it. Even if you were racing it, it shouldn't cause the valves to stick. It probably isn't even the "valves" plural, but just one valve in particular, like I mentioned before, the TV valve. GM had problems with this valve sticking, causing late and hard shifts. I have experienced this in my car and know what you are going through. Usually just readjusting the TV cable was enough to free mine up. Give it a try and see if it helps.
As for the tranny shop, what a crappy place. They couldn't prove that you were racing anyway, they are just stereotyping, wich is a form of racism. My car used to do this BEFORE I ever started racing it, and is totally unrelated. Don't back down, you have rights as a customer.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, man, if I were you I would go back to that shop and make them fix it! Tell them that you know people (like myself) who drive the ever living &*%$ out of their cars/z28's and their tranny's work perfectly fine. If they say that valves are sticking, then ask them why they didn't clean, smooth and debur the valves? If they still persist on being DORKS, then go to the Better Business Bureau. I mean after all they accepted a job, which was to rebuild a tranny for a sports car, so it damn well better perform like one, right!
But, let me cool my jets here, you mentioned that "they" said the problem could be due to the governor. Did you change it to the corvette governor by chance? Because that will make it shift much later. Also, like GMTech said it could very well be only one valve, possibly the TV valve. Again, insist that those clowns fix it and I would suggest you fix this problem b4 you install a shift kit. Oh, and add a Transmission fluid modifier to your tranny fluid - this will help prevent sticking valves. You can get this at Transtar Industries, they carry good brands and you can get some OK tranny additives at Pep Boys and the like.....
Good Luck

Well you guys are right. I'm going to www.bbbonline.org and will file a complaint ASAP. Too bad it will take quite a while for them to take action and my car will still be messed up. I'm gonna take out the governor tonight anyway and look at it and maybe clean it. Then the pan will have to come off so I can have a look at the TV cable linkage and valve. Thanx guys for the encouragement

Looks like it sort of fixed itself 1/2 way. Now it will shift at a somehow normail 3400 RPM out of first gear then smoothtly into 4th I believe where the rpms are real low and the TC locks up, which I believe is normal. I havent done a WOT test to see if it still shifts into 2nd and 3rd... LOL
What I did is I took it to bout 5000 rpm in 3rd then it finally shifted into 4th. After that is when it finally became "unstuck" and started to shift somewhat normally. Hehe... Weird.

The BBB should be a last resort. If the tranny shop refuses to help you out after several attempts, then contact the BBB, but I would try and work it out at the lowest level. Many shops will finally buckle in and help out if there reputation is on the line. Good luck.

Well what am I suppposed to do after they said they wont do it ? Go back there and beg ? I tried to semi-argue with them on the phone when they called with the bad news, but that didnt work. Obviously they dont have a reputation to mentain if they dont want to do this for me.

No, don't beg, its just a car. But like I said, you do have rights. I'd go in there and raise hell (especially if there are other customers in there, that makes it more dramatic). If you feel you have exhausted your options then by all means, call the BBB.

Do that and see if anything is in the pan. If they put it together incorrectly, maybe there is debris in the pan, wich may have gotten into the valvebody, and that may give you some more weight to fight with (they may also blame it on "racing") but lets not hope for that. Change the fluid and filter, and see if you can't find some of that "conditioner" that somebody mentioned. I have seen it before, but never used it. It can't hurt. Also make sure that the TV valve moves freely in its bore. Once you pull the pan off, you will see the TV valve, it has the cable hooked up to some linkage that acts on the valve.
