shifter really loose like, plus can't get out of reverse??

today i went to go out, and i put it in drive, and it seemed too easy and like loose when shifting it, and i kept going backwards. no matter what i tried, couldn't get the car to go forward. is there something wrong with the cable being either loose or broken or something? and if that's the case, how do i fix it, and/or is it something easy to do?

Can you feel it catching the gears? If not you prob have a broken shifter cable. When my dad and I were working on my trans, we broke the cable and it'd catch all the gear but reverse park. It would go into those gears but wouldn't engage. It was in position, just not in gear. The cable isn't hard to change though. My dad done it in a few mins while I was out riding around in my friends Camaro. Lazy me heh, lol. Cost about $30 from the dealer though.

Sounds like the shifter isn't moving the cable. That could be simple, like the cable came loose from the shifter, or slightly more complicated, the cable is broken.

This wouldn't be a bad project to get your hands dirty on. You need to lift up the shifter plate from inside the car (fairly easy) and see if the cable is still on the shifter. There are two cables in there, one to shift the tranny, the other to lock the shifter via the ignition switch. Move the shift lever back & forth and click the ignition from lock to on, with the cover up, and you'll be able to see which is which. The cable has an eye that slips onto a lug on the shifter, and is held in place by a wire clip.

If the cable is broken, you'll have to get the car up in the air to get to the tranny. Two pan bolts hold the cable to the tranny, and a clip on the shift lever. It passes through the floor via a soft rubber grommet.

If you don't have any repair manuals, get one. Even a Haynes will help you with this task.

I suppose it is possible that the shifter itself is broken (lug), but I'd put that pretty low on the probability list.

i fixed the problem today. the bracket that is on the cable itself that is connected to the pan, came off the pan. both bolts must have fallen off. but when i put my shifter panel back on inside the car, the lights for the gears don't line up right now. how can a fix this or adjust them?

Sorry I didn't see your post a couple days ago, that bracket would have been my first suggestion, glad to see you got it.
I had trouble with mine more than once, those 2 bolts working loose. You may want to put some locktite on the threads of the bolts.
As far as lining up the shifter plate, if I remember correctly, there is a bit of adjustment on that bracket. Also, I believe you can adjust the shifter panel as well.
