ok i am wanting to swap in a 6 speed. my new car is a 89(1 piece rear main) iroc witha t-5, my old car that has the engine i want in this car is a 2 piece rear main. i have been told that the flywheel from my t-5 car will not bolt to the back of my old cars 2 piece rear main motor due to a diff. in hub size.
what do i need to due, i have e-mailed summit and they havent responded. i know that they make them and i have been looking everywhere do find info on them but every one always starts witha 87 up engine so it is easier for them.

I think there is a kit that will convert your pre-87 block to a 1 piece rear main seal. I'm not positive on this though so someone else might know for sure.

Jegs lists '85-older flywheels. GMPP lists p/n 14085720 for 2-piece rear main cranks.
They're out there. Just ask for an '85 flywheel.
Don't forget the pilot bearing. I'm assuming your old car has an auto tranny.

I have one from and 84 L69 in good condition if you are interested. I put a one piece seal engine in and had to get a new flywheel.

I've done several write ups on this before. Do a search. You will need to order the 12 3/4" flywheel with a 3.58" crank bolt pattern. You can buy one from jegs but the best deal is the one from Jim Pace Pontiac (www.paceparts.com)(possibly SalleCheverolet) nodular iron flywheels. I called a few months ago and they were on three week backorder. They only weight 15lbs and are only $150. I believe Jegs wants over $200 for one and I know for sure Summit does.
However, I'm guessing you're doing a LT1 6-speed swap and not a richmond/aftermarket one. If you're using the T-5 bellhousing use the flywheel above. If yousing the T-56 bellhousing you will need to order a special flywheel from hayes that is the same dimensions as the LT1 flywheel but neutral balanced with the larger crank hub.

i just thought of this, couldnt i just go to the local parts store and ask for an flywheel out of an 85? how do i know if my flywheel needs to be internally balanced or external or even neutral? i am now some what not confused.

400 SBC and one-piece rear main flywheels are counter-balanced and the other SBCs before 86ish are neutral balance. You can't just go to your local parts store. You need to order one from Pace Parts, Summit, Jegs, or a dealership. Autozone type places don't carry anything but flexplates (auto tranny). The 6-speed uses a completely different clutch set up and wouldn't work with a regular SBC flywheel. The LT1 flywheel is dimensionally different if I recall correctly.
Oh yeah, BTW, the "conversion" kit probably has a new crank in it (only way it would work with the LT1 flywheel), if not he will still need a new flywheel.
If you can get someone to confirm LT1 flywheel dimensions you might be able to put an LT1 clutch onto an older SBC flywheel.

When you put in the six speed I take it it is going behing the 2 piece rear main seal block? If you are going to try and use your T5 clutch and bellhousing with the T56 using the conversion plate, I wouldn't. That method requires shortening both the driveshaft and the torque arm.
I just installed a T56 behing my 85, 2 piece rear seal, LG4. All you need is the clutch assy (Pressure plate, p.p. bolts, t.o. brg, and clutch disc from the car you're getting the T56). As for the flywheel, Centerforce makes an LT1 flywheel for both 1 piece and 2 piece rear main seal sbc's. I belive the part# is 700107 for the 2 piece seal flywheel. It runs ~$250 to $300 from summit and jegs.
As for whether or not you need and externally balanced flywheel, chances are you don't. You'll need the internally balanced (or neutral balanced) flywheel unless you're running a 383 or 400 sbc.
Good luck and drop me a line if you have any questions with the swap.
