newbie tranny question....

ask me about a 4th gen and i could tell you anything, a 3rd gen, well that's a different story. hehehe. anyways, i was going to get a third gen and do a carb engine in it. i will be ripping out the computer. will there be a problem with the 700R by doing this? will i need a seperate lock-up switch? Also, will all this need to be done as well if i swapped to a TH350? thanks for any advice.

You've got it pegged; you'll need to do something for the TCC lockup. http://www.bmracing.com sells a few kits that you can buy through http://www.summitracing.com that take care of this exact swap. Also check out http://www.thegrid.net/thedrivetrainpage/700inst.htm

I don't think this needs to be done for the TH-350, but you will have to rig up the kickdown cable to the carb. Of course you gotta rig the same thing for the TH-700R4, anyway.

OK, here ya go:

1994 Trans Am, LT1 engine, 4L60 Transmission. 50,000 miles, new plugs and wires. Detonates on cyl. #7 under hard acceleration. #7 is the only cylinder that does it, this is verified by removing the #7 plug wire and snapping the throttle.

The engine was de-carbonized, and still does it.

#7 is recieving as much fuel as the other cylinders, and there is no vacuum leaks.

What is causing it and why?

Hey, you said anything.

As for your question, TomP did a pretty good job already.

My Gueses:

The plug has a small burr or metal piece on it that is pre-igniting the mixture prematurely.

Or, that ONE SPARK PLUG is of too hot a range for that engine (guy put one wrong plug in on a tune-up?)

A/Freeze or oil sucking in causeing Pre-ignition (bad head gasket?)

Cap terminals indexed incorrectly for that cylinder and/or some funky slop in distributor and/or timing chain?

The answer is fairly simple, and is kinda like a "cure all" for these cars. Kinda like letting out some blood will cure you from what ails you.

I was waiting on a reply from z28kid, but I don't want to dog anybody out. I learn new stuff everyday, so I never say I know it all.

Anyway, its the distributer cap on the opti-spark. If you know how they are built, there are "tracks" molded into to cap so that 2,4,6 & 8 are on one side, and 1,3,5 & 7 are on the other side, yet still maintain its firing order as the rotor turns, its real funky. Anyway, over time, they burn out and start to crossfire, so whatever cylinder comes before #7 is firing, but grounding out through the #7 plug. I know this is WAYYYY of topic, so I will shut up now.

sorry for the delayed respone. been away for the past 5 days. anyways, i don't know everything!! i know enough to get by solving most major issues. anyways, i would have said something simple like it's possibly the wire being being crossed up or it being bad out of the package(i had that happen) GMTech, you are God!!
