700R4, Computer dependent?
700R4, Computer dependent?
What if i want to put a 700R4 in a non-computer car or truck? i know i need the torque converter switch, but do i need any specific year range of trans, or are they all the same.
thanks

after looking at some other posts, it looks like the trans was not computer controlled until '94. So tell me if you can, how does the computer controll shift points, and what's the point of a chip for an auto vs a manual tranny? i'm really curious about this
thanks

The ecm only controls the locking of the TCC, not the actual shift points. That is still handled "manually" through the conventional way inside the transmission. My knowledge is more with the 730 ecm, I cannot comment on the 165 ecm, but I believe they have something similar as the later 730 ecm.
So, for proper controlling of the locking of the TCC, you do need a different PROM for an automatic. Rumor has it that an automatic PROM will work on a manual transmission car as the PROM for the manual only controls the "shift" light.

The computer doesn't control shift points. A chip change may change the MPH at which the torque convertor is locked up, but that would be the only thing that could affect the transmision. Everything else about the transmission is mechanical, and therefore putting it into a non-computer control vehicle wouldn't affect its operation except for the TCC lockup. Like you said, you need to control that seperately.

Cool!
thanks for the info. i've always been a manual guy, but i'm planning on a truck with a 350 tpi and a 700R4. I hoped all that you ended up telling me. All i have to do is controll the tcc.
Thanks again for the info
