Is there a difference in flywheels in pre-87 700R4 cars as opposed to post-87 cars?

Just curious. I may buy an '83 HO 'Maro, and want to put in my "newer spline-style" B&M tranny and converter.

yep the flywheels or flex plates on the engines with one piece rear main seals have a weight because of the missing metal from the flange on the back of the crank. it's not really a weight but it does act as one so they had to add a weight on the flex plate to compensate for the missing flange.

The post 87's have counter balancing much like what is used on the SBC 400 (because the increased stroke of the 400 leaves less room for the counterweights on the crank). Post 87's also have a 3" mounting flange while pre-87's have a 3.58" mount flange which makes it much strong and much better suited for a high perf. applications. Flexplates are cheap and readily avaible at most autoparts stores.

Oh, and to answer your question. The current flywheel should work unless the new convertor requires a 14" flexplate, again, readily avaible.

you shouldn't have a problem putting a newer style 700r into an older car. the flywheels are different as stated above but the bolt patterns as far as flywheel-to torque converter are the same. so the newer 700r will line up with an older flywheel
