Hi guys, i have an 85 z28 camaro, 5.0 auto.

I was driving it down the freeway at 70 just fine, no noise or anything, just smooth riding.

i took it home, parked it, next morning get in it to go to work, it shifts from 1st to 2nd, but not 2nd to third, it will either stay in second or hit neutral.

the fluid is where it should be, the tv cable dosent look like its moved, and this is a 60k mile car that (under my ownership) has seen maybe 2 burnouts.

ive heard online that the 3-4 servo will die, but every guy i talk to says theres something simple like a vacuum that let loose, i just dont know where to look.

the car has been sitting since 98, but ive been driving it since i bought it in march at 61k and now its on 67k.... and its been fine up to now.

any ideas?

Sounds like the 3-4 clutch has failed there is no 3/4 servo . Sorry but sounds like its time for a trans or a rebuild

 

yep been there done that, get that thing built good and strong, its worth the extra $$$$

 

well mine didnt go out like that, i broke it racing one day. i lost overdrive immediately, then 3rd went a few hrs later after i stopped it and cooled down. i started up and it wouldnt go into 3rd at all and just would free rev when it tried

tranny is shot man. 3 and 4 gear clutch packs are fried. rebuild time but shocking its done at 60K miles. Mine killed at 135K or so

but what would cause a clutch pack to just go out overnight?

when the aod in my thunderbird needed clutches, it would slip in overdrive

so in these 700r4's, do they just break? because there was no slipping in this car.

again, not argueing, i just dont get it.

 

if it was a servo problem it would not go into 4th....Is your fluid burn smelling or dark colored?

 

There are several possibilities as to why it when out suddenly a common thing is the 3-4 clutch clearance gets high and can cause the snap ring or even drum to break at the snap ring location

Well guys, with my head down and wallet crying, i limped the car 3 miles to the transmission shop (same place that did my tbird).

I told em what it was doing, and they said well, it may very well be blown to smitherines inside, but they had a guy take it out and see what was up.

Turns out it was never leaving first gear, the 2-1 shift applies a driveband brake that slows it down. They said it would be a wild chance, but had me leave it overnight to cool off. First thing in the morning, they took out something (right behind that cat converter) and the little nylon gear on the end of this peice was chewed up. They threw one on, drove it, it worked perfectly (shifts harder now IMO) and didnt charge me a dime because they were axious to watch the OSU game hah.

I figured id give you guys the update on it. And have this stored on the site as an easy fix if another poor guy gets bullied by his 700r4 lol

hey superbee, what do you mean it would be a servo problem. mine is not shifting into fourth. i took it to a trans place here in town. they said the 3-4 clutch was gone. they replaced it and its still not shifting into fourth (od).

the fluid looks fine and is not dark colored.....
im taking it back tomorrow so they can recheck the thing. any suggestions anyone.....

just finished rebuilding today... same thing 3/4 clutch goes out and you need a rebuild. The chances of it being a vacuum modulator are rare in that case. its more of a hope for not having to spend alot of time or money. might as well get a better stall while your in there. good luck
