sugg. on ring gear choice.......

hello again, i need opinions on gear size for my 'ROC. I was going replace the broken 3.42 set with the same size from some aftermarket (prob. richmond) but have a set of free 3.73 out of an 85 4cyl camaro. I know the gears could never have taken a hit that would weaken them from that drivetrain. SOOOOO should i try these 3.73's first??? I can always change them after this race season. Also in the event i do is the right speedo combo "7" drive gear, "21" driven gear? Lastly, who makes a good rear bearing/seal kit?? Thnx alot, look forward to your insight.

richmond makes a install kit that has everything you need. you ought to even have a few pieces left over. 3:73 is a good set for street preformance if it's an all out drag car i'd look at 4:56 gears. sorry i don't know about the speedo gears.

Another gear install kit is Ratech.

Speedo gears sound right, that's what my HO car came with, with 3.73s from the factory.

As long as the gears are in good shape, no rust or run dry or anything like that, they should work as well as any in your car.

Do you have an automatic or a stick? Your sig says "7r4" which I take to mean 700R4 which is an automatic? The 7 tooth and 21 tooth gears are for stick shifts. I think the ratio is 15 and 45 for an automatic and 3.73 gears.

Do you have a 9-bolt or 10-bolt rear end? 89 cars came with 9-bolts, and 10-bolt gears wont fit.

let me clear things up.
1. it was a 9 bolt now a 10 bolt
2.yes i have an auto trans and will be keeping it.
3. it is going to be street driven, some track time.
4.also is the mileage difference between 3.42 and 3.73 going to be big?

and lastly for those with 3.73" what is your traction and rpm at cruise like????
