Nah, not too bad. But I'd HATE to waste the time if I were you. I had NOTHING but problems with my 700R-4......replaced it 4 times, then swapped in a 6-speed. Don't get me wrong, if you get a QUALITY 700R-4 (not from a local rebuild shop)......like one from Art Carr (even though I've heard some bad things from there too), or better yet, Pro-Built (never heard a bad thing there)....you should be good. But plan on spending some $$$$$. Personally, I like to bang through the gears.

OOOOOOOHHHHHHH, damn man.....I rebuilt one on my own, and I'm not gonna lie...it's a PITA if you don't have the necessary tools. You can do it though. The only advice I have is lay everything out on the floor exactly as you took it apart, that way, there's no question what goes where. And take your time too, don't rush it. And, if your girlfriend pisses you off some night, don't fly over a nasty dip at 80 MPH and rip out your tranny cooler lines, running your tranny dry and ruining all that work you put into her (the tranny, not your girlfriend). Cars are way more important than women, never take it out on your car. Don't floor the throttle, floor the woman (oh, I'm goin on a rant here). While you got it apart though, build it MEAN, find the part # for that kickdown switch they put in police camaros that lets the tranny shift to OD at WOT. Alotta guys on this site know the #, just ask (it's cheap too).

Good luck,

Kelly

Make sure you get a later model 700R4. The early ones are garbage, the later ones are pretty decent but can still be made stronger.

The 700r4 is about 3 inches longer than the 200c. A shorter driveshaft will be needed(junk-yard for about 40 bucks). The crossmember won't work because it needs to be moved toward the back of the car a few inches. The holes aren't drilled and tapped to move the crossmember back. Modification is necessary(I modified mine my cutting and welding the existing crossmember). The shifter won't handle the tranny having 4 gears instead of three, a later model shifter or aftermarket should be used(I used a B&M Megashifter. You may need a lockup kit depending on if you have a computer and if the computer will control the 700r4. The crossmember is the biggest problem. The 700r4 isn't a bolt in installation, but it can be done. The overdrive is worth the effort. My cruise rpm went from 3000rpm at 60mph to 2100rpm at 60. I would do a stock rebuild and install the vette servo and .5 tv boost valve, both are simple--especially if you have the tranny apart, and will make it shift very nice.

The computer only controls the lock-up of the converter on the 700r4/4L60, not the shifting. 4L60-E has the shifting controlled electronicly. The 700r4/4L60/4L60-E is it no way controlled by vacuum.

It was not fun with 3.73's and no overdrive on the highway, the interstate at 75 was even worse.

You can get lockup switches easily. Don't worry about that part. The driveshaft...eh, gonna hafta have it. If you and your dad can rebuild one, you can easily swap it out. Hell, when I go home next week for the break, I'll look around the garage and basement and see if I can find my old shifter and junk. If it's still there, I'll send it to ya free (if you pay the shipping). I'm always willing to lend a hand to a fellow swapper. Don't give up.

Don't toss your old driveshaft. Somebody on this board will want it because it's the correct length for a standard length th350(6 inch tailshaft).

turns out im not getting a 700R4. im getting a TH350. the 700R4 costs more and it needs modification. so i figured the TH350 would be better on my wallet. in the next couple of years i want to get a 5 or 6-speed anyway

Hey dude! I put a TH700R4 in my '82Z. It wasn't too bad. And I know you are concerned about the initial cost. But I am only turning 2200 RPM @ 70Mph. The overdrive is great. I have also found a very cheap way to use the stock 700R4 crossmember without any cutting or welding. As for shifters. I would go for the B&M Megashifter, for safety sake.

well, my dad is helping paying for it and he dont want to pay an extra $500 on the 700R4. i found a bullet proof 700R4 for $1300 and i found a bullet proof TH350 for $900. both come with converters. and of course, my dad is going with the cheaper one. i really dont care. i just want my car back on the road. the tranny blew 1 week ago and i already miss it.

The extra gas you are going to burn will quickly add up to and then overtake the $1300 dollar transmission.Because the TH350 or TH400 do not have overdrive. Just a thought! I have a '69 Chevelle SS396 w/TH400. And I am, going to install a TH700R4 just to reduce the engine rpm at highway speeds.

i know the TH350 has no overdrive. its just going to be more work to get the 700R4 in.
Me and my boss are going to do the swap and i still have to pay him. and its going to be more with the 700R4 because of modification. we just dont have the money. we dont even have the money for Any tranny. we are borrowing money from a friend and we dont want to borrow more then we NEED. and can you beleive that my TH200C blew on Christmas Day.
