Disk to Drum swap ?'s

Ok i won the bid on a rear on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...431783&r=0&t=0

But it is a drum rear and the end parts are welded on not bolted on like a disk setup. If i can get a master cylinder/proportioning vavle off of a drum rear setup will the brake lines be the same size as my disk ones? I mean arent the disk lines larger than the drum lines? Whould i have any other problems do you think? My disk rear is beyong fixing i mean i have a bent axle i have the wrong size yoke in it and the seal leaks the gears are not meshing the way they should. Any ideas or help would be apprciated.

The brake hoses are all the same size for J50 (disc/drum) or J65 (4-wheel-disc) braking systems. However, the rear "axle-to-adjuster" ebrake cables, master cylinder, and proportioning valve will be different for your car.

I'd suggest a new body-to-axle rear hose, though. I'd also suggest new e-brake cables, even though it looks like this axle comes with them. If you do a search through http://www.yahoo.com for "carparts.com coupon", you can find some great coupons (I used a $50 off $100 one) to get you this stuff for cheap at http://www.carparts.com . You might also want to click near the top of this page, on the "search" word, and search this forum for "bearings"- I wrote up a thing on how to change the rear axle bearings & seals using a home-made puller. At the very least for safety's sake, replace that one brake hose.

Actually, 327Firebird, I didn't confuse them. Just go to the Thirdgen.org's RPO Decoder (at https://www.thirdgen.org/cgi-bin/rpo/index ) and put in both J50 and J65. J65 is disc/disc.

You are right, though, in '89, the J65 was dropped, and the J50 was used for both systems for 89-92.

Ok looks like i am not getting the master cylinder. What do you think would be the difference from my disk brake master cylinder as to the drum brake master cylinder? Someone said something about a check valve in the master cylinder itself. The check valve is suposed to give the drum rear a little bit of constant pressure where as the disk one doesnt or something like that. Does that make any sense to anybody? Thanks

Well Tom got the master cyclinders backwards, The J50 is the Disc/disc but also used for the disc/Drum and disc/disc after 88. The J65 is the disc/drum used from 82-87. So if you have the J50 you can use it on either set up and don't need to change them. However you will need to get a prop valve out of a drum brake rear car and the e-brake cable's if the rear didn't come with it. Its an easy swap as long as you have all the parts on hand.
