Will a T5 out of an 88 305 T/A hold up to an a stock L98?
Just as the above question states, will it hold up? How hard would it be to switch? I do powershift. Would that kill it? Would it help me in the quarter? Also, how would it affect the value of my car? Thanks guys

if you are gonna drop in a L98,the T5 might or might not last. Powershifting will kill it a LOT quicker. My 305 has hurt at least 3 T5's(according to the last owner),and the WC that is in it now isnt doing good. I dont powershift it often, and NEVER do when im spraying. Next up will be a TKO. the stock T5 is rated at like 300ft-lbs,and the L98 makes more than that.

The factory didn't seem to think so...
I have a T-5 behind a 400, I have torn up quite a few. I've been real gentle to this one so it has lasted probably 25,000 miles so far, which might be a record.
It depends on how you drive it. If you drive it like me you could explode it the first time you back out of your driveway. On the other hand, if you're careful to avoid shock-loading it (that seems to be what torches them the fastest) it might hang in there for a while.

well thats put it this way my 305 is stone stock, runs mid 14's, and has ate the second gear. Another thought is that if gm thought the t-5 could hold-up to the punishment of the 350 don't you think they would've put it in from the factory. I agree with Dirk in that the TKO is the way to go. I'm going strait for it and using my t-5 as a boat anchor.

my T-5 had about 130000 miles on it when i changed from my LG4 to the 300hp 350 last spring. I didn't rebuild it, thinking i'd save my money and when it died, i'd swap a t-56 in. Well the engine has been in there for almost a year now, and the tranny is still going strong. I grind third gear a lot more than i'd like, but the new shifter should take car of that. If you ask me, the T-5 can handle the load of a stock L98 w/o many problems, but if your gonna spend the money to do a tranny swap , why not just go for the t-56? in the end it would probably end up costing you just about the same as a t-5 swap, and they can definately handle the extra power, just my .02...
