How can I tell if a junkyard tranny is good?

I'm gonna open her up and look at the diff and take out the axles to check for wear, but other than that I'm not sure what to look for. Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Thanks,
Brandon

I think you are confused. The "tranny" and "diff" are two different things. If you are going to "pull the axles out and check for wear" then you are indeed looking at the differential. You will want to check the very large gear (ring gear) for chips, or unusual wear. You won't be able to see the small gear (pinion) without removing the carrier. The most frequent failure I see in differentials are the bearings, but this will also require dissasembly.

As for checking a tranny, you can take the pan off and get a "general" idea, but you won't know for sure untill you install and run it.
