83 disk brake rear HELP PLEASE
83 disk brake rear HELP PLEASE
ok i got this car a couple years ago it has a th200 metric tranny in it and has cross-fire injection. i drove the car and at WOT the 1st to 2nd shift kicks the car sideways filling the street with smoke and putting a huge grin on my face. anyway, i pulled the diff. cover and counted the teeth on the gears and it came out to be a 3:73 gear set. i know this isn't stock.and as i said it ALWAYS spins both tires. it doesn't have any clutch packs in it though. it just has some funky paw/hook thingy. anyone ever seen this?????
you must be the guy i've always head about. you know the one with a cross fire car with enough power to get out of it's own way.

hey that posi you have is STOCK, at least in some cars. That paw/hook thingy is a piece that senses different wheel speeds and engages the opposite axle when needed....They are not noted for their reliability!!
My 84 Z has one that is on the verge of self destruction.

Sounds to me like somebody beat you to the guts of that diff...
The "posi" you describe is an Eaton Gov-Lock which never acme stock in a F car, only S-10s; and 3.73 didn't come in the cross-fire cars either, only HO cars.
I'd bet that somebody came up with the HO car rear and the Eaton S-10 carrier in the boneyard and put them in the car and that's how that combo of parts got there.
That "locker" is extremely fragile; they're known for failing with 2.8s in the trucks. I'd treat it gently if I was you.
Also, you might find it worthwhile to count the splines on the axles while you have it apart; there are both 26-spline and 28-spline those, and it might be real handy to know which one you have someday, like when those little tiny teeth things shred and you're looking for another carrier.

sorry, i forgot to mention that some poor schmuck out there now has an 86 iroc-z with that rear in it. a tree fell on the 83 t/a. i bought the iroc-z with a bad rear and took the rear out of the t/a. feel sorry for the guy, now that i know what a crappy rear it is.
