Replacing speedo gear sleeve- am I doing something wrong?

Car: 1989 IROC-Z
Engine: 383 stroker
Transmission: 700R4 3500 stall, TransGo shift kit
Axle/Gears: Moser 9", 4.11:1
Replacing speedo gear sleeve- am I doing something wrong?
I have a 700R4 and I broke the speedo gear sleeve when putting the torque arm back on. I got a new sleeve and I can't seem to get it to go all the way in. If I remove the gear, I can get the sleeve in pretty easily. Is there a trick to this? I tried turning the driveshaft while installing the sleeve to get the gears to mesh but that didn't seem to help. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!
