shift kits

What is the difference between a shift kit like one that hurst makes, and putting your auto tranny in 1st and shifting like that? Does the shift kit just affect how crisp the shifts are? Thanks~Arnold

Maybe he meant a shifter?

Shifters don't make the car faster, or shift differently, than before.

They've got two purposes: 1= They look cool, 2= Some ratchet ones make it impossible to hit the wrong gear by accident.

There's only one way a shifter will help you- if the original shifter and shift cable are so worn out that they're not engaging the detents inside the trans fully.

Hurst DOES indeed make a shift kit. It's called "Hot Shift". I was actually gonna run it in my tranny but decided not to. I haven't EVER heard anyone talk about it either.

So then a shift kit is what makes your shifts crisper, which hurst does not make. So can you buy a shift kit and use the stock shifter? I am kind of confused:-) ~Arnold

Hurst DOES make a shift kit...............and yes, this is what makes your shifts crisper. You do NOT need a new shifter.(The thing that you use to select park, drive, reverse, etc.) I haven't personally seen the Hurst kit for the 700 R4 in particular, but I've seen them for the TH 350's so I think they prolly make one for the R4 too.

Alright, thanks guys. I thought that the shifter was part of the shift kit like it was all the same thing. I didn't realize that you just replace the stock shifter. Thanks for clearing it up.~ Arnold.
