Problems downshifting

89RS 305 TBI stock. I have problems downshifting particularly into 4th. If I'm cruising along in 5th and need to downshift I have to engage the clutch put the tranny into 1st or 2nd, then it will usually go into 4th for me. Otherwise if I try to go to 4th it acts like it wants to shift for me put it doesn't engage all the way. Any suggestions or comments. Thanks in advance.

Are you running the stock clutch? If so how many miles on it? I had the same problem particularily at highway speeds. I would try to shift to 5th and it just wouldnt go in. Same with 4th. I had to play with it to get it in. Now that I just replaced the clutch, no more problems.

It was a stock clutch with 100k+ on it by the way.

I'll second the vote for a clutch. Sounds like it's starting to drag and not releasing completely. Luckily they are fairly easy to change

Thanks for the info. It has the stock clutch with 102K on it. Is there any way to tell rather or not the clutch is going bad, any tests or anything. Thanks again.

89RS, At 102k if it isn't going now it will be soon. It's lived a good life, time to put it out to pasture. Take a day and a 12 pack say a few nice words and do a clutch job. I seriously doubt that it's anything else.
