Just completed axle build-up

I recently built up a spare rear-end for my car. If you want to see what all I did, check out this link: 10-bolt build-up

I learned another method to set up the preload that in most cases will also put the backlash right on the money. Using the service spacer on the ring gear side and a bent shim on the passenger side we added shims to the ring gear side until the backlash was at .001-.003. Then we added a shim to the passenger side that would go in with pressure from 2 thumbs(spacer installed). We would take the size of that shim and add .010-.015 to preload the bearings. After measureing preload and using the equation you described would would add or subtract shim to get proper preload. Most of the time proper backlash will be established this way. Have you ever seen any problems due to ring gear runout? My instructor told us this is an important check but it doesn't seemm like it would be a problem as most people would be using new bearings anyway. What do you think? Variance numbers are based on a .045 pinion shim right? I must have slept through that part of class.
