v6 t-5 can i do this?

ok guys i have found a v6 t-5 for very cheap, the t-5 in my iroc right now is pretty messed up, no here is my question.
v8 t-5 26 spline input shaft, 10.4 inch clutch
v6 t-5 14 spline input shaft, 8.? inch clutch
now i know that i cant use the v6 clutch because it wont hold, i found a 11 inch clutch disc for a chevy truck with a 14 spline input shaft .
now can a machine shop cut .3 inches off of the outer edge of a clutch disc?
i found a shop that will try it and they said it would probably work, if it does then i should be able to bolt in the v6t-5 with the v8 pressure plate, flywheel, etc.
is there any other things i have to change? anything else that may pose a problem?

sorry this post is so long and thanks in advance for any info .

OK, I'll say it. Do not use a V6 T-5 in your Iroc. You need to change the bellhousing. The gearing in the V6 T-5 is different then the V8 T-5. bla bla bla bla bla and so on. Do a search on this board for the T-5 and read everything you find. If you walk in and ask a machine shop to cut three inches off the clutch disk they just might laugh at you.

Find a V8 T-5.

i dont need to change the bellhousing, im not asking a machine shop to cut 3 inches off, i am asking them to cut.3 inches off, (notice the point)thats a little more than 1/4 inch and yes i have heard that the gear ratios are different, but i have a 3.45 rear gear so i dont think it will hurt me to much, and as far as the strength issue goes i have heard of many people using v6 t-5s behind 327`s and decent 350`s without any trouble.i am not doing this because i want to but because i need a trans with all the gears opposed to just 345 like my current one.

No, I doubt that will work.

Do you know what happens when a clutch disc fails, considering that the disc is like 6" from your ankles? I know a couple of people, former racers, now in wheel chairs, who can show you the results.

I wouldn't use the V6 tranny.
BUT there is no WAY I would use a hacked up clutch.
two options -
1) see if you can get the right clutch size witht he correct spline count aftermarket. Try Hayes or somethign like that.

2) take the input shafts out and swap them

I work in a machine shop and there is no way that we would do what you are asking. And I know what .300 is. I work with tolerances of +/- .00025 sometimes.

tell you what, call gearzone and similar places like that. Talk with these people. they will be able to explain it better than I could as to why you should not use a V6 T-5 behind a V8. After that is said and done with, then go ahead and make your decsion on what everyone has said.

I have done it it works end of story, I used the V6 T5 behind the 305 in my 86 Z i used an older V6 disc which is 9 11/16 and the 10.4" Z28 pressure plate, it worked fine i believe I have 3.42's in mine, I went to a local clutch rebuilder recently and they said they can build the proper size disc with 1" 14 spline for about $50 i believe it was, wouldnt reccomend trying to machine an oversized one though.

Like most others have stated, the V6 unit may not last long behind the V8. Here's an idea that may work for the short-term if you really need to run the car: remove the input shaft from the V6 tranny and count the number of teeth on the gear; then call up a local tranny shop and find out if they can get one with the exact same number of teeth with the 1 1/8" 26 spline configuration - one tooth difference will not work. If one is available you can install that and not have to worry about the clutch issue at all.
And don't go beating on the tranny too much....

Not this again I had 255/60/15 firehawks on the rear and constantly beat on it and it held so it will work, after you do some mods then worry about it, save for a T56 or something but for now yes it will work fine.

The easiest way would be to have a clutch shop make you a sort of custom clutch plate if they don't have anything the right size/spline combination. Did it for me no charge (since i was buying a clutch kit). v8 sized clutch plate with v6 splines. Works perfect.
