9 bolt capacity
What would be the maximum power handling capabilities of a BW 9-bolt?
I already know from the broken pinion in my well travelled 3.70 that high 12's on drag radials is about it. Maybe 400 engine hp and similar torque.
However this off season I have to decide whether to rebuild with fresh parts and a quality gear set or bite the bullet and purchase a Moser or equivalent (I'm not aware that there is one).
I've seen a few here that are 12 second cars (maybe even faster) that list the 'Ozzie Posi' in their signatures.
Beyond a quality set up are there any mods that make them last?
My application racks up a lot a street mileage as well as half a dozen drag strip days so I'm looking for a little longevity as well as strength when I'm racing with slicks.

put it behind an auto with street tires and it handled my 400 just fine.
put it behind an stick and bad things happen.

Re: 9 bolt capacity
I'm going with a strange S60 in my project car. They're made to bolt right into 3rd or 4th gens and so far I haven't heard anybody say they can dent or put a hole in the floor pan like a 9 inch will in some cases.(normally on lowered cars). The S60 is cheaper and stronger then a 12 bolt the only thing i don't like about it is that I can't get it powdered coated.

Re: 9 bolt capacity
it should hold more than a 10 bolt rear and mine is holding 1.41-1.45 60 foots so far and many 1.5-1.6's so far
Thats 400whp on motor and the 1.4's were on a 150 shot so thats over 500whp
Would i recommend it? no. its a time bomb. It SHOULD break but matter of when. To increase your chances run 3.45 gears and a TA girdle. 3.45's are thicker than 3.73's so they are stronger
BUT i've broke my spider gears with a 1.79 60 foot and 240ish whp. Go figure

What brand of rear gear do you use?

Re: 9 bolt capacity
My experience exactly.
Only difference is that I make considerably LESS power than the Firebird doing the wheelie.
Maybe a quality gear set will stand up to what I can give it.
Certainly a lot less expensive than a Moser or Strange rear end.
Until I break the new gears.....

you should be fine for a while, when you do your burn out try to not allow the tires to chirp upon completion just let the car roll to the tree..
the TTA does run harder at 22psi but we were on ET streets
