did the open 10's come with the GM 7.5 or the 8.5? what spline axle. Reason: i'm thinken of getting new axles+c clip eliminator, + limited slip and maybe disk brakes. any info would help.

All third gens came with 7.5. Around the late 80's it was upgraded to 7.625 (7 5/8). Also around that time the axles were upgraded from 26 to 28 spline.

If your 83 diff is still original then you have a 7.5 with 26 spline. You can install the 7 5/8" gears on that carrier. You can upgrade to 28 spline by using a SLP Torsen limited slip and axles from www.drivetraindirect.com part number KAC7-A7. If you go to disk brakes you don't need c-clip eliminators. NHRA rules state that you need an axle retention device. Disk brakes do the same thing.

I have a 3.08 rear end I htink it has a 7.625 carrier, I wanted to use the carrier on my 3.73 reared but the 3.73 gear was too small for it.. Does this mean the 3.08 rear has 28 spline axles? Thanks kevin

3.08's are on a series 2 carrier. 3.73's require a series 3 carrier. 7.625 is the ring gear size, not the carrier. The carrier is the same with 7.625's as 7.5's. The spline change took GM a while to do, so the only way to tell for sure is to count.

pre 28 spline axle rears are 7.5??

hmm
I bought, and installed a powertrax locker for a 7 5/8 rear with 26 spline axles.
It would seem to me since they sell the above product and I installed it and dont have any problems that the rear is a 7.625
but i dont know enough about rears to tell you for certain.. just my experience
