Shifter cable..700r4

This just happened today, in front of the parts store I could not get my car into park from Drive; the shifter felt loose, it would just move back and forth. When I got under the car and pushed the shifter lever on the tranny into park I got back in the car and tried to put it in drive and this time it did shift down into reverse, then to neutral then drive and so forth, but the problem comes when I try to put the tranny into park from D, N, or R. it wont go back up. Whats up? Will replacing the shifter cable fix it? I bought the cable but now I am not sure if that is the whole problem, thanks guys.

It sounds like the bolt through the pin in the end of the cable into the shift lever has come loose and is allowing the pin to slide in the slot. Put the selector and the manual shaft of the transmission into neutral and tighten it down.

I had a similar problem a couple years ago. My problem was the shifter cable was binding when I tried to put it in park. I replaced the cable and that fixed it.
