cracked flex plate
Does anyone know what causes the flexplates in these cars to crack. I replaced the one in my car three months ago and it has already cracked. I want to figure out if there is something else wrong or if I just got a defective part before I break down and pay someone to fix it this time since I don't have a garage and don't want to do it in the dead of the winter in the pacific northwest. Thanks.

Too much HORSEPOWER!
Not likely though with a 305... Other than that, you have alignment issues. Make sure the tranny is pulled up tight and that the t/c fits nicely into the pilot. Of course, it could just be a bad part....
Also, I've seen it done without actually pulling either the trans or engine, but you gotta have some long wrenches and little hands.

Re: cracked flex plate
You need to go to the hardware store and get some long bolts, like 6 inches, and put those in the bottom two bellhousing holes. Remove the other 4 bolts, torque converter bolt and remove the crossmember. Put a good jack under the tranny and slide it back until it won't go no more. That should give you plenty of room to change the flexplate. Done this many times.

Re: cracked flex plate
I just cracked mine.. I built an all new 383 stroker.. upgraded EVEYTHING... that is until my wife was lowering th engine and I was guiding her on the engine mounts and realized hey dummy you reused the beat up oldflex plate...
Well the flext plate made it through the engine break in... then first WOT after 250 miles... cracked...
I am having Santa bring me a BM or TCI upgraded unit.. check out summit.. they really are not that bad about $90.00.

Re: cracked flex plate
yep it does work you don't have to pull the engine out. i pulled my tranny and put one in. over 2 days of work 3 hrs one day to take it out. which i was slowly doing it since i never done a tranny pull on a camaro which btw very easy. and putting it on was good. all u need to know is make sure when u pull out the tranny if not using bolts to hold the engine is take the dist cap off b/c it will break on the fire wall.
