I can definately say the '86 Firebird has a mechanical speedo, don't know about '87-up.

87+ Firebirds, and 90+ Camaros. But, the speedo units are completely interchangeable. You can put a mechanical speedo in a 91 trans, for example, or vice versa.

About how expensive would it be to make a 91 700R4 elec speedo work in a 82Z?
Would I need a different speedo gear and housing? or is there more to it? I've never seen the elec speedo setup on a tranny.

My 86 trans am parts car definately had an electronic speedo. I cant be absolutely sure that it was there stock, but the buffer box was mounted in stock location and the wires were run thru the harnesses like stock.

Cfabe, if the buffer box was on the back of the speedometer, it was a non-digital unit. My '86 has the yellow box back there, too.
