Does my '91 GTA have 28 Sline Axles???
I was told it does... is this true? I'm wanting SLP's $100 carrier, but it says for '88-'01 models EQUIPPED with 28 splined axles. Does this mean I may not have them or what? Thanks for any help... just want to get this thing all done. I'm also assuming these are 3 series carriers? Later

The carrier depends on the ratio. 3:23 and up have the 3 series while anything lower than 3:23 has the 2 series.
I am doing a similar swap. It took me 4 months to find 28 spline axles cheap and close enough to me!!
I have the SLP take-off posi sitting in my basement. It looks pretty nice. Too bad i will never really see it again!

Lucky you, I'm saving up for a T56 now! I still havent gotten to the track, its one thing or another. Hopefully on the 31st. You're doing the smart way, I did the stupid way and put the big engine in first, then replace parts as they break.

*Hey- I talked to a guy at SLP today and he said that '91s could have 26 or 28 spline axles. He said the only way to tell is to pull the axle and see. I really don't want to do that just to see. Is he right? This would mean extra down time for my car. He also said the carrier would be nonreturnable also. What should I do??? I guess I'll just have to pull an axle. I'm just wanting my 4.10's and posi unit in

Check you axle code. I believe the guy at SLP is mistaken (though GM is capable of anything). All 1991s were SUPPOSE to have 7 5/8" ring gears with 28 splines. If you have a 7 5/8" ring gear then you MUST have 28 splines, only the 7 1/2" ring gear came with 26 splines.
And to the best of my knowledge, all 1991s had 7 5/8" ring gears.

Wait a second Glenn... I thought GM switched from the 7.5" 10-bolt to the 7.625" 10-bolt in 1985 or so. The 28 spline axles didnt come out until 1989 or 1990.
A 1991 should definitely have 28 spline axles.

Kevin, I was under the impression the 7 5/8" ring gear was the replacement for the 9 bolt Australian. And due to problems GM had with the 7 5/8" with rear disks is why so many L98s ended up with aluminum rear drum brakes instead of disk brakes.
I got into this battle with GM in 1991 when I found out that my GTA did not have disk brakes but aluminum rear drums and this was what they ultimately told me. And due to the limied availability of the rear disk posi rear-end, these were reserved for the G92 cars.
Regardless, in 1991 all F-body cars(especially GTAs) were SUPPOSE to have 7 5/8" ring gears with 28 splines. The only differences would be posi vs open (all GTAs should have posi) and drum vs disk (which seems to depend if you have G92 or not). If I had to bet on a 1991 F-body car not having 28 splines, it would be the open rear-end ones.
But, as I said, GM works in mysterious ways and what your SUPPOSE to have and what you DO HAVE can be two entirely different things when it comes to GM.

I remember there being some kind of strike, or shipping problem, or other such problem that GM ran out of disc brakes to put on cars in 1991. So they put drum brakes on, like your car. My 91 was built in June of 90, and has disc brakes.
28spline was actually available in some 88 models. (late 88).
I had 28spline 3:42s before I broke them in half. So I went searching. I found a stock rear from an 88 formula . Pulled the axles and what do you know, 28splines. As soon as the 26spline 3:73s I have now go, the original 3:42 posi (28spline) is going back in.
In case anyone is wondering, I bought them from tommygun006@aol.com
