700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

Went to drop a 700r4 trannsimssion from a 1984 camaro z28 but ran into this problem
Second bolt up on the drivers side of the tranny is practically impossible to get to. what do i need to do? i can't get a socket on there, or a wrench, the angle is all messed up and the bottom of the floor is too close to the bolt.
Is this because the guy before me has different motor mounts on it and the bolt is sitting higher than its suppose to?
any help would be appreciated. thanks

p.s. the tranny job is on hold until we can get some help so any advice is welcome.

If you still can't get to it, try a socket and a universal joint on the end of a long extension.

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

before dropping the tailof the trans, first remove the distributor cap so you don't crack it, then loosen your y-pipe from your headers or exhaust manifolds.

The mopar guys like to drill holes in the floorpan/firewall they can fit a socket through. Serious.

I've always had the tail shaft hanging down, and been able to fit a stubby box wrench. Its a pain

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

Okay, got the speedo out. from what we can tell the only thing holding the tranny in at the moment, it the jack thats supporting it, and the engine. but we can't get it out, we were told that we had to move it back and down at the same time. no luck. any help or better descriptions as to what to do from here? thanks

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

its starting to slid back like its supposedly suppose to do, how far does the tranny need to come off the block before its safe to bring it straight down? its about 2 1/2 inches to about 3 inches or so away from it.

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

No, we thought we could take the TC out with the tranny. we came up about a half inch short cause the tranny ran into the floor. we are disconnecting the TC now. only problem with that is we have to turn the engine to get to the 4 bolts on top unless there is a easier way of doing it. There is only 4 bolts right?

Take the VSS out, put the cable-driven sleeve in.

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

That simple? Amazing. Okay thanks, one more question. The torsion bar or i think what some people call it the torque arm?, anyway, the bar that runs from the tail end of the tranny to the differential. What is the best way of pulling that off? we just unbolted it from the differential and slid it out of the clamp on the tranny, only problem was that the entire axle tended to start rolling when jacking it up and the coil springs would start coming off. we just stuck a block of wood between the U-joint and the frame to keep it from moving. Is this a good way, or is there a easier one that i don't know of?

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

The easiest way to point the nose of the diff is to put a jack under the panhard rod on the driver's side. Be sure the car can't roll or move...

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

i lifted mine on the lift points and not the rear end, when you re install it bolt the TQ arm up, slide the bushing and bushing holder (lack of better words for it) than bolt the TQ arm to the trans

dont forget the dipsitck like i did last night

i was X 1,000

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

No pics, sorry, but the axle has a bracket near each wheel. These brackets hold the big coil springs. The one on the driver's side also holds the panhard. If you jack up out at the end of this bracket, then the nose of the diff will begin to point down, and then you can slide the torque arm into it's front bushing by the trans, then onto the diff housing. This is the correct way. The other way tends to damage the front bushing, as well as requiring you to remove the distributor cap and loosen the Y-pipe from your headers or exhaust manifolds.

Re: 700r4 Tranny swap problems need help ASAP

i should make my self clearer, bolt the TQ arm bracket to the trans first, but leave the bushing part off and bolt that up with the arm
