T/O Bearing worth keeping

How can you tell if your throw-out bearing is good? If it spins? Can the throw out bearing cause the whining noise that my tranny makes or is it the fly wheel? It starts making the noise at about 2 grand, and it clatters/i've got the transmission pulled right now and the clutch is shot and the fingers on the pressure plate are worn and bent. also what type of grease should i use for the throw out bearing
it's on a 5 speed p/u

Whoops sorry about that, if you didnt catch that other message I forgot to add this in as well, When i hold the clutch in you can barley hear the clattering but when its out in neutral it is very loud.
thanks a lot

bigchev342, I always use the rule (i forgot who told me) that when you replace the clutch always replace the t/o bearing.

Yea I was going to change it anyways, but i was going to replace it anyways but i was curious if the throw out bearing is what was making all the whining or if thats just responsible for the clattering.
thanks-
