TV cable hookup is wrong, right?
TV cable hookup is wrong, right?
Hey guys. My car is an 88 camaro with TBI 305 & 700R4.
Here's what my throttle linkage looks like, it's been like this since I bought the car, recently. I think the TV cable and cruise control cable need to be swapped where they connect to the linkage.
The reason I think this is that from what I have read, TV cable should extend as the throttle is opened. Mine instead retracts as the throttle is opened. Also the cruise control cable (the one with the long slot) would be straight instead of curved if I swap them.
The way it is now, top to bottom: accelerator, TV cable, cruise cable.
The way I think it should be, top to bottom: accelerator, cruise cable, TV cable.
Can anyone confirm this?
If you're wondering, the transmission has issues - doesn't shift out of first gear. Had been thinking it was probably a bad governor gear. But maybe this linkage issue is part of the problem, too. The car will shift into reverse and drive (1st), but it does it really hard.

Holy cunundrum! So if you turn the cruise on does the car go back to idle?
Re: TV cable hookup is wrong, right?
Well I haven't tried the cruise yet - since I've owned the car it hasn't shifted out of first gear, so no oportunity for cruise yet.
I swapped the cables to the correct positions last night. I had to temporarily remove the throttle/TV/cruise bracket in order to get the cruise cable off the TV "pin" on the throttle body linkage. That back bolt on the bracket is tough to get to!
Test drive tonight. Maybe I can get second gear this time. Then again maybe not, I've heard an incorrect TV adjustment will destroy a trans quickly. I'll let you know.

IT SHIFTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Took it for a little drive. Since it was only my third of fourth drive in the car (not counting onto / off the trailer), it was dark, and the brakes are weak, I stayed real close to home. 5 minutes through the neighborhood.
I definately felt 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I didn't notice 4th gear, but I was only going 35 mph tops and only a couple seconds at 30-35 before slowing down, and turning around. I don't know if it should get into 4th by that speed and if so would it be perceptible. I may have let off the pedal quickly from accelerating in 3rd to coasting at 30-35 mph and just not given it time to shift into fourth under power.
Initial shift into drive and reverse from park was also much smoother than before.
I did not like the way backing up in reverse felt. Almost like it was slipping slightly. Although this is the coldest air temp its been when I drove it (about 50F here in Texas).
Anyway, thanks for the help. It is better now. I will do a little more diagnosing for my other trans issues. Maybe I can use it for a while. Even if it needs a rebuild at least the TV cable will be right when it goes back in.
