TH200C TRANNY....WORTH KEEPING?

MY 1982 Z28 HAS A 200C TRANNY. IS IT WORTH REBUILDING AND KEEPING IN THE CAR OR SHOULD I SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON A 350 OR 400 TURBO AND ALL THE STUFF TO SWITCH IT OVER. I'M NOT GOING TO RACE THE CAR, I JUST WANT IT TO BE A GOOD, FUN, DAILY DRIVER. THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL INPUT.

if your running a stock mill then just keep the original tranny. I mean it worked well all these years why change? But if your gonna run more power, say a 100 more horses or more, then a stronger trans needs to be installed. I have never really heard of a 200 being used for performance applications. I would suggest a 700R4 for street performance stuff. For racetrack duty, go with a 350 or 400. The 700R4 is a four speed and much better for street use, it'll turn lower rpm's on the highway and get better gas mileage, and still be plenty strong enough for performance. But if your mill is stock then why go through the trouble of swapping tranny's for no real reason? Good luck.

Mine had that stock too. One transmission shop didn't know of the trans. and the others said to throw it in the garbage. I switched to a 700r4 initially for the overdrive that helps a decent bit with street rpms, but they can also be built to take 550-600hp fairly easily but not to say cheaply. As long as you plan to stay under that hp then I'd say make the swap. If you get say a spohn trans mount w/tq arm mount and their adjustable tq arm, you get a pretty nice setup along with not needing the special tail housing to mount the tq arm to. Cheapest way would be to get a 700r4 with the tq arm mount and a stock 85-92 crossmember. In this case you will need to drill a couple holes as the rear bolts on your crossmember become the fronts of the new one.

Thanks for the info, guys. I guess I'll keep the 200 and spend the $900 to have it rebuilt. I might have the old girl on the road again by spring.

There are some performance parts out there for them. There is a TransGo Shift kit too. I will look them up, and let you know on Monday. Dana
