5-Speed or 6-Speed?

I was planning on rebuilding my 305 TPI late this summer, and putting some performance parts on it(headers, cam, cold air)...but i was also thinking of getting a manual put in place of my 4 sp OD. Is this a difficult task to do? How should i go about doing this? And what should i go for if i do it...a 5 or 6 speed manual? Any info is apprecitated

The T-5 5-speed is lighter, much cheaper but less durable then the T-56 6-speed. The T-56 is capable of 450 ft/lbs, has the extea gear but is very heavy and cost mucho dinero!! and it might be overkill for the 305.

Tom...

If its overkill for the 305, then its a waste. Thanks for saving me lots of $$ and aggravation. I'm not looking(yet) to put out more than 300-350hp. I appreciate the info.

The way i look at it, a 6 speed is more durable, heavier(but who cares?), and the stock t5 is a joke. I don't care what year you get even though the 91-92 WC t-5's were pretty stronger, nothing compares to the t56's. I'm hoping to take my stock t5 out when i get enough money for a t56. My brother has an 88 5.0 mustang(yea i know..sorry) with the stock t5 he has beat the **** out of it in alost 2 years. If you can take it easy on the car, meaning don't drop the clutch and/or speed shift the t5 will hold up pretty well. Again, while your doing all of the mods to your car later this year i can understand you will be strapped for cash so if you could get the t5 cheap that would be another reason to go with it. Plus if you did get the t5 and got it working it would save alot more hassles down the road if and when you wanted a t56.
I know i'm saying alot of contridicting things here but i'm just trying to give all of the +'s and -'s to the t5 and the t56.

Hope that helped,

Brendan
