4th gen driveshaft on a 3rd gen

1.) I've heard that these will fit on a 3rd gen without any problems. However I'm switching to a 9bolt rear which I haven't seen yet will this still work?

2.) I've heard that all of these are aluminum
is that true?

3.) What is a good price for one of these?

1) Yes, 4th gen driveshafts will fit thirdgens with 700R4's or T5's.

2) No, 4th gen LT1's have steel driveshafts too, except the 1LE's, and possibly the B4C's. However there is a service bulletin that allows LT1's under warrenty to get aluminum driveshafts if they complain about driveshaft vibration. No, it doesnt apply to thirdgens too.

3) James sells them for $150 I believe. My dad and I got ours for $50 each but we were both damn lucky New they're in the $250 range or so.

OK, so I just got an e-mail from a friend of mine who said the LS1 f-bodies have aluminum driveshafts and that an SS or WS6 is supposed to be aluminum as well and .5 inch bigger in dia. Any truth to that?

ADV1,

I have no experience with fourthgen cars, though I've sold many thirdgen alum shafts to fourthgen owners--including people who own V6s, believe it or not--but I'd have some difficulty believing that ALL SS/WS6s have the alum shaft. As I mentioned, however, I have no personal experience. I can say that the 1LE shaft has a diameter of 2 3/4 while the LS1 has a dimeter of 3. I BELIEVE, new, the LS1 shaft is cheaper, which begs the question, why? You might try WWW.F-BODY.ORG/4thGENFAQ.HTML (2/3s way down under 4.3 Transmission and Drivetrain) for more info.

The 4th gen's fit just fine. If you'll look in the GMPP catalog there is an alum d-shaft pn. it will fit your car just fine. I can get you this shaft new for like 225 plus shipping. I work at a D/FW pontiac dealer.
