Trying to make sure its broken.

A couple of weeks ago i was driving my 91 RS kind of spiritedly down my road and the worst thing happened. My gauges all froze, but mainly, my tranny wouldnt shift into OD afterwards. It had never had problems before, and i dont see why it wouldnt shift into OD due to me bieng WOT in 3rd. I checked the fluid its still redish-pink, and it doesnt smell burnt. No metal bits or anything in it either.

So should i be looking at flushing the tranny and hoping i get OD back?

OR

Rebuilding it/getting another tranny?

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

it shouldnt shift into 4th at WOT. what should happen is you should let off a bit and then itll go into fourth. is that whats happening?

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

Nah, i read my original post, and i could see i worded it kind of wrong.

After my original run( bieng WOT in 3rd), when i let off, the car didnt go into 4th/OD as it usually did. Ever since then i havent had OD and my guages are frozen.

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

Please name the gauges that are frozen, and what they're stuck at.
I'm thinking that maybe the ecm lost power or a speed signal so that it doesn't provide lockup anymore, and that maybe that is what you are experiencing as no 4th.

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

The tach is tached out(though it never worked anyway). The speedo was stuck at 80, but has since dropped to 0. Oil pressure is at 45 psi, the volts are at 0, and the temp guages is maxed out.

My aftermarket gauges still work perfectly btw.

So what causes this problem and how can i fix it?
Thanks for the quick answer also!

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

i doubt it will work, but disconnect the batt over night to reset the ECM

just a thought, but it sounds like an eletrical devil on you gauges, maybe a converter not locking up

but if its really in 3rd and not going to overdrive (like said it may be the converter not locking up) then its probably some trash or some crap hung up in the valve body, servo or what not

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

OK. ill give that a try tonight.
Im beginning to become scared that my tranny really is giving out. I was testing it out today, driving around. It was in 3rd and i went WOT but the tranny didnt downshift. I throttled it in and out and it finally downshifted, but it didnt feel like it used too. The revs were up but the car wasnt moving as quick as it used too.

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

wiring doesn't make a difference on this trans. You should get fourth gear regardless. you can disconnect the wiring four pin connector and still get fourth gear. again no wires shift this trans it is all done with the governor and valve body/tv systems hydraulically. no fourth a lot of times is a burnt band or band drum cupped and the band not holding. Otherwise known as smoked! The band in this trans is a 2-4 band. If you look at a range reference chart for this trans you would find that in second gear the forward sprag helps second but doesn't help in fourth. if you manually shift into second the o.r. clutches also help second hold. Fourth doesn't have a lot of help mostly just the band, forwards, and 3-4 clutches. Probably the 3-4's are on their way out also if the band is smoked.

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

hmm must not love your maro like the s/n suggests

BTW i would call the cops, that guy stole your car and put a spair 700r4 in it when he stole it........you could of got alot more, if it looks as good as your signiture suggests and it had good miles and a nice intreior you got raped. i was just offerd 3k for mine as it sits, rear end out and a dent in drivers door (new rear end will be home saturday and the dent gets fixed soon after its back on the road and then a new paint job granted im all matching low miles and extra clean also)

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

LOL contrary to what it says, im actually a Firebird guy (Dont tell anyone )

I know I really could of got more.. Kind of screwed myself because the guy contacted me right before i got the new transmission(for free). Car was also primered, so no paint on it. But in order to not be a jerk, i went ahead and gave him his chance to buy the car, and he came through. Eh, you live and you learn right.

Now im looking for a Trans Am/Formula!

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

Why not a 8cyl.? It'd probably be faster. No replacement for displacement especially with the 8cyl turbo'd. I run a centrifugal supercharger but wish I had a big block or turbo. Maybe a six with turbo would be faster than my combo 11's is pretty slow with a v8 and supercharger. Boost at 12psi.

Re: Trying to make sure its broken.

RPM's are a replacement for displacement. If your statement was true.......(as many believe it is) a small block could never beat a big block. Then you factor in power to weight bla bla bla bla.........Be different, be an underdog. Remember the buick grand national. You know the sedan that was faster than the vette in the 80's......

Im going with a V6 because I want to be a bit different this time. My 91 was a 305 V8 with headers, Intake, and a little head work and it was satisfying. But I just feel like going a different route.

Grab a V6, rebuild and strengthen it, add the turbo kit, nice turbo cam, and some other odds and ends..Then rev the hell out of it and ride!!

A GNX would be a super sweet ride, id love the drive one of those. Or at least get my hands on the motor
