What is a good combo: Gears, Tranny & Diffs

I recently had a misfortunate accident and am in need of a new axil shaft and possably new gears. I am trying to find out what combination of parts work the best. I have a new 700r4 in the car right now. Would it be better to change it to a posi rear end or leave it as it is, the one wheel motion. What kind of gears are going to work the best. Let me know what has work for the rest of you. I hear 355's are the best but I hear the same for the 373's.

hard to say what would be the best for you when you don't say what you're wanting to do with the car.

Can't get 3.55's, 3.42's are the closest to that. 3.73's will really wake it up, and cost you minimal mileage. But, I'm willing to give up a little mileage if I can increase the fun factor. Traction will become a problem with deeper gears and an open diff. I reccomend a powertrax streetable locker(It's what I have and I think it kicks @ss) or if you have 28 spline axles the SLP torsen is good. All of the above is assuming you want performance. If you want mileage, higher gears 'tend' to get you better mileage. The mileage increase will be larger if you drive for long periods of time at high speed. However, if you really want mileage buy a Geo.

well depend what motor you have...I'd stay away from the 3.73's on TPI, unless you have heavy mods that allows 6k rpms (trust me on this...been there)...Power trax locker sucks, no flame...friend had one, and after about 1000 miles it went...well...just went...hehe...get a good old clutch posi, GM or Auburn, or what ever brand....

85 Z28, 355, edelbrock base, SLP runners (old style) 58mmTB, ported plenum, stock cam, fuel reg, TES headers, flowmaster, 3.23's posi, rear disc, shift kit, MSD 6a, 305 hypertech chip (YUUUCK!) best prior intake mods: 14.6 @ 94, 2.02 60' temp: 78deg, 80% moist, on radials.
69SS, black, 3,73's, TH400, 402 BB, roller everything (solid 246@50 622 lift)+stud-guirdle, 67 Vette heads ported and o-ringed, about 10:1 cr KB pistons, should be done this summer, goals: 500hp and lots of fun

The camaro has a 305 TBI. I would not think it would really matter as long as you have an overdrive for the highway.
