help identifying a used 700r4
hi all, i bought a basket case 92 trans am that had motor and trans pulled for a donor truck(had race 357tpi setup and very built 700r4)
The guy gave me a 700r4 that his friend had and the friend told me that it had a shift kit and some goodies and went manual so he gave it to me. All i know is a its a electric speedo setup withc will work for my car. I need to know if it s a 305 trans or 350 trans. So far the parts that came with car were 350 l98 car parts but from 87 not 92(MAF car not SD)
so i ask how can i tell what its specs w/o tearing the trans down? BTW, it has no date tags or stickers as they are fadded beyond reading.

I don't think there is a difference. A V8 700R4 should be the same for 305 and 350 engines.
Is the 700R4 from a third gen? It will have a torque arm mount attached to the tailshaft. Without that mount, you can't attach the factory torque arm.

i knows there are differences because ive burnt the 305 700r4's up behind l98's before. Something about the clutches and pump are different. i have no clue where to look on the trans for a tag or vin code

There is no difference. GM put the same 700r4 behind all V8 F-Bodies. It doesn't matter if it's from an LG4,LB9 or an L98 car.

Re: help identifying a used 700r4
to put it in perspective, i have burnt up a 700r4 in a LG4 car(my 85 t/a) with a bolt on LG4(190hp)
friend with mild LB9, is on way of burning up his(near 300hp mark)
ive seen only one 91-92 700r4 behind a l98 and very mod'd(close to 390hp.....it shows no slipping or anything
the tech said clutches/pump/and valve body settings are different
Re: help identifying a used 700r4
A L98 trans and a LB9 trans are identical. Some L98 trans recieved the "vette" servo and the vette/police package stiffer accumulator springs. - The ID tags are worthless for any trans unless you know for sure the exact vehicle it came from and that it's never previously been out. The pump and clutches are the same for any V8 f-body trans. - If the tech you spoke with believes otherwise I'd find another tech.
As for year and series, there is a number stamped into the case on the pan rail.
Comparing stock transmissions is a total guessing game. Do you know for sure the entire life of all the vehicles? Maintenace and fluid change intervals along with how hard it's been driven how many miles? Maybe if it's ever been out/rebuilt? - These cars are far to old to say that one lasted while another didn't.
The '85 trans is no form of comparison to a '86.5+ trans. Very different animals all together.

Re: help identifying a used 700r4
There were some production changes over the years but I doubt there were differences between which engine it was behind. As long as the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, it will bolt right up. Lots of things got production changes. Look at how many head castings there are for the same engine over a number of years. Even the 10 bolt diff housing changed a few times between 82-92.
Around 1987, the input shaft size was changed. That's the only real difference I'm aware of.

Re: help identifying a used 700r4
the shaft went from 27 spline to 30 spline
the forward clutch pack used a wave next to a clutchv.s. wave next to steel
the forward sprag used a plastic thrust no topvssnapring to hold together
the low reverse clutch no wave at bottomvswave
no auxilliary valve bodyvsauxilliary
different torque converters to fit splines
checkball reverse input drumvs no ball
pumps different to facilitate aux tube
---out of breath---could go on and on-bla-bla
all can be good if the builder is good enough-the late model stuff will exchange into the old stuff but major experience is necessary.
