is it o.k. to manually shift an automatic

I'm sure you've had this question a thousand times (I'm new), but I have to know. Is it ok to manually shift my automatic. I seem to get a different answer from everyone I ask. Some say I'll ruin my trans, yet others say its perfectly safe. The last thing I need to do is spent all my money on a tranny.
p.s. I'm 18 and will be racing at Cordova(I think thats how you spell it),IL on May 13, in the battle of the high schools. Look for "VIC V 8".

It's perfectly safe. However I do remember reading a response by Vader to this (Vader is a guru on this board) and he said that the bands or something may wear out slightly faster because of the different pressures in the tranny when it's shifted manually.

Anybody else have any knowledge of this?

If you constantly bang shift your auto it will wear parts down quicker "heat"! But there seems to no alternative when you race.
the tranny builds more heat when you shift manualy and shift linkage gets streched.
Nothing you can do about the linkage but to keep the heat down use a trans cooler "big trans cooler" this will help alot.
good luck at the races.

Upshifting I've heard was ok to do but I was told not to downshift the car.

If you are going to manually shift the transmission (upshift), then you need to install the largest intermediate/reverse servo possible. The factory .296 or the Trans-Go .300. This valve raises line pressure when first or second position is selected on the shift lever. If you are going to downshift this trans, then make sure you are giving it gas when downshifting, otherwise if you downshift the trans without giving it gas the line pressure is down and it will let the band come on slow (hi-rate of wear and/or you will glaze the band). It is like double clutching a stick transmission.
Hope This Helps!!!

Is that true?? To give it gas on downshifts? Like from overdrive to drive? Ive always heard not to give it gas because it wears down the bands or something. The reason I ask is because when I take long back road trips with a lot of hills I usually downshift to drive because I heard it was better on your tranny when climbing or going down hills. Is this true??

When you are about to make the downshift, give it gas while you are moving the lever. Once in the next gear (shift completed) then you can let off the gas. When in the hills, or on a steep climb it is always better to be in the next lower gear. In drive "3" the transmission will encounter the least amount of wear. Reason, the gear train inside the trans is all moving in the same direction. Remember 1st & 2nd are underdrives, 3rd is direct, & 4th is overdrive.
Hope This Helps!!!

rare-roc-z, my friend (SLVR 28)informed me it was moved form the 20th to the 13th, but the day after i posted i went to the cordova site and it still said the 20th, so it must be. i'm trying to get to corvoda april 22, if thats the swapmeet day (i can't remember).
On the 20th look for my car (check sig.) i also have "bowtie men" on my side windows. i will probably be with a 76 camaro ( gray and black) and a 84 H.O.(gray) (SLVR 28). I'll definitely be looking for you because i want to see what those 3.23s will do. I'll probably be putting them in my rear this summer.
