84 Camaro, Want a Torque Converter - How do I know if I have a 27-spline or 30-spline

I was looking at the Summit catalog at the torque converters. For our TH-700R-4 transmissions, they are divided into 1982-84 (27-spline) and 1984-91 (30-spline). Since I have an 84, how do I know which one to order? I am putting in a new engine soon, and I want to order my torque converter first. What are they talking about when they say splines? In other words, what has 27 or 30 splines? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It refers to the size of the input shaft on the transmission that the torque converter has to mate with. A spline is a groove almost like a gear tooth. The more splines a shaft has the larger it is.

As far as telling which you have, someone might be able to tell you from the numbers on your transmission.

You'll probably have to count them to know for sure. 84 was the year that gm changed from 27 to 30. My 84 Z-28 had 30 but my buddys had a 27. You might be able to find out something from the numbers on the trans. Anyway good luck!

It was a carry-over year. Just like with the aux valve body 700r4's in 1987. Some had it, some didn't. You have to check to be sure otherwise it's a gamble. You may have either spline count.

The Outer Diameter on the 27 spline is apx .890 & the 30 is apx .990. If you have calipers or micrometer this is the faster way to do it.
Hope This Helps!!!
